"I'm ready to find my forever home!"
Sheba's Update by Mary Kenton
Sheba's long struggle with diabetes, pneumonia, broken ribs have been just some of the challenges she just takes in stride. Sheba's tail never stops wagging and her food is plentiful and premium. Her special foster parents and other foster dogs have made her rough road so very nice, knowing she has them to help her conquer all that has come her way. She is a happy girl who has learned how to maneuver throughout her foster home like a pro, even the stairs, to where they have to be blocked off so she won't take a tumble again! Sheba has learned how wonderful GRRR's Golden Angel supporters are and hopes to be able to see this world again. Sheba is now in search of a forever home where she can hopefully have the cataract surgery that GRRR promised this sweet girl. She will be posted on our website shortly and she hopes that someone who has been patiently awaiting her recovery will be ready to adopt her and make her their forever girl. If you have been wanting a sweet, special Golden Angel to call your own, Sheba would love to meet you! You'll fall for this Angel and wonder why it took so long to find each other.
Sheba's Golden Angel Story
A big hello from me! My name is Sheba. Now that you’ve seen my picture, I’m sure you’ll want to find out all about me. I’m about nine years old, and my life has been very different from what many loved family pets have experienced. GRRR tells me it’s going to get better and better and that makes my tail wag! Until recently, I lived my entire life outside in a dog run. I have diabetes, and since my family could no longer afford my medications, I went untreated for a long time. That caused me to go blind because of cataracts. Some people would have turned their backs on a skinny, malnourished blind girl like me – but not the wonderful folks at GRRR. In fact, when the kind volunteer came to get me, she even told me I’m beautiful! Imagine that! Well, okay, that pretty much sold me on GRRR right then and there.
Off we went for a visit at Dr. Carpenter’s office. Wow, I’ve never had so much attention and love all at once in my life! Mary Kenton says everyone who meets me instantly falls in love with me because I’m such a special, precious little Angel. It doesn’t seem to matter at all that I’m not a picture perfect Golden. I’ve got to tell you my tail never stopped wagging the entire time I was there. I felt like the “Queen of Sheba”. I spent several days at the hospital while they pampered me and got my diabetes stabilized. I started feeling better right away. The best news is that when Dr. Carpenter examined me, he said that after I gain some strength, my eyes can probably be fixed. Isn’t that incredible? Then I would actually get to see this wonderful new life you’ve all given me.
I was placed in foster care with Trish and Bill who welcomed me right into their family. I fit right in and enjoyed my daily walks and hikes and the company of the other furry kids. For the first time I found out what a life of being loved and being part of a family (as an inside dog!) was like. I can’t even begin to explain what it was like to no longer wake up in that cold, lonely dog run just hoping someone would come by to give me a little attention. Love and kindness filled each day from beginning to end. As I became more comfortable there, I even managed to get into some mischief. One day I climbed the stairs but couldn’t see to get back down them and fell. My fosters were heartbroken when they found out I had broken four ribs, and they felt it would be best if I could be in a home with a better set up for a sightless girl who likes to go exploring.
That’s when I met Joyce and Bob and I moved into another wonderful indoors home with them. They were trained on how to care for my diabetes and things were going great. Then, one Sunday morning they noticed something was wrong. I was very sick and not eating or moving around. Mary came to check on me and discovered I was burning up with a fever of over 104. Even though it was Sunday, Dr. Carpenter rushed to meet me at the hospital and immediately started me on IV fluids. I had come down with pneumonia, and the broken ribs were making it almost impossible for me to breathe. Oh, I was so sick! After 24 hours of care at the hospital my little tail started wagging again – always the barometer for me! I’m happy to report I’m doing much better.
I’ll soon be searching for my forever home, and I thought you’d like to read what Joyce has to say about me just in case you might be interested in making me a part of your family. “Sheba is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever fostered. She has so much love to give and asks for very little in return. She is beautiful inside and out. Sheba seems to really love life and tries very hard to just be a dog. Sheba is an Angel in every way.”
Don’t you think I’ve come a long way? I’ve survived loneliness, malnutrition, diabetes, blindness, broken ribs and pneumonia. Nothing can stop me now! I plan to really concentrate on getting stronger, healthier and gaining some weight. Then I’ll get to have my eyes fixed. I can’t wait to actually SEE Mary, Trish, Bill, Joyce, Bob, Dr. Carpenter and all the wonderful staff at Arvada West. I already know them by their kind voices, gentle touch and healing hands. Everyone at GRRR has given me the gift of life, and now the Golden Angel Fund will give me the priceless gift of sight. Because of you I will have a second chance at a happy, healthy life in a loving forever home. Thank you with all my Golden heart.
