Max is one of those sweet souls who just captures your heart the moment you meet him. He’s a cuddly teddy bear of a Golden who could sure use a good friend right now – in fact he could use lots of GRRR friends and support. Nine-year-old Max came into rescue with his best buddy, Abby. Both were extremely frightened, unsure of themselves and in need of lots of TLC. They were terrified to walk on grass because they had never seen it before. They were much more comfortable on the sidewalk with the all too familiar concrete. In fact, they both had to be carried onto the lawn to have their photos taken. It was obvious to us they had spent their lives confined in an outdoor kennel.
After one look at Max, we rushed him to Dr. Carpenter for an evaluation. Although he has the potential to be a very handsome fellow, his black leathery skin, loss of hair, scabs and scaly ears make him resemble a baby elephant, not to mention the way the poor guy smells. He has a severe yeast infection that has gone untreated for a very long time. Although we hope his ears will improve over time, the insides almost look deformed from all the infection. We can only imagine how miserable the poor little guy has been, especially during the heat of summer. He has probably spent a lifetime of unnecessary pain, itching and suffering. But he stills manages a smile and a happy wag when some love and attention come his way.
Max is receiving the best of care including medications, ointments, shampoos, conditioners and ear treatments, and he is starting to show some improvement. Our little pachyderm is turning into a Golden Retriever again. His thin coat and bald patches are starting to fill in a little and he seems more comfortable. It is truly a blessing to Max that he is now getting the help he needs thanks to all the wonderful Golden Angel donors who have a soft place in their hearts for Goldens like Max.
Max asked us to mention that he sure hopes he can find a forever home soon. He realizes he doesn’t have “show dog” good looks, but he has a heart of gold. He’s loving, mild-mannered and an expert cuddler. He enjoys a good game of fetch, and it’s those simple pleasures that mean the world to sweet Max. There’s nothing he wants more than to hang his leash by your door, settle in with you and enjoy the rest of his life loving and being loved by you.
